HOW TO MAKE A
 BOAT STAND

LAST UPDATED: 01/27/00

The most popular boat of the club, the mini soling doesn't come with a boat stand.  One has to either order one from the manufacturer (Victor), or make his own.  Most of us chose to make our own.  However there are different ways to make a stand.  I am using a sling type stand, which is fairly common, the stand cradles the boat with a sling.  This is a bit easy to make, but when I saw one of the member's stand, I thought it is easier to make that design than the sling type.

I decided to make a how to make a boat stand page based on that type of stand rather than the sling type.  Is is way faster to build, and needs only a minimum amount of material, easier to build too. Although, these are for the minisoling, you can also use this as a guide to make a stand for other boats as well.

Materials need are:

4 pcs.    Rectangular pieces of wood, around 6 inches long, 1 to 1.5 inches width, and around 1/2 inch thick.  One can make this, using a 1/2 or 3/4 thick plywood.
1 pc.    18 inch X 12 inch 1/2 inch thick plywood for the base. The length depends on how long your boat is.
2pcs.    Wood screw 1.5 to 2 inch long depending on how thick your materials are.  Or you can also use stove bolts, which I use 2 inch long.
10pcs.    1" wood nails.
Wood saw
Hammer
Measuring tape
Wood glue
Wood paint/laquer or varnish

PROCEDURE

1.    Cut one side of both lengths of all your rectangular pieces of wood.  (please refer to the drawing no. 1 below).

2.    Make an X with 2 pieces of wood as shown in the drawing.  (no. 2), then use stove bolts or wood screw in the middle of tthe pieces of wood, where they meet each other as shown.

3.    Take your base and using your boat to determine the proper height of the X relative to the base.  After determining the proper height, glue the pieces of wood together.  Do this on the other side of the base with the remaining pieces of wood.

4.    Using your boat again as reference, mount the 2 Xs on the base, making sure that the X s will support your boat from both aft and stern (bow and transom).  When you have determined the right place to mount the Xs, use wood glue, and then wood nail to permanenty mount them in place. (Drawing no. 3)

5.    Rest your boat in your new boat stand, and take note of all the pressure points where the wood touches your boat's hull.  You should then install foam, duct tape or any kind of padding, to prevent scratching or excessive pressure on the hull.

6.    If you find that the Xs are not that stable, you can install another piece of wood accross the Xs to make it more stable or ridgid.

Good luck, if you have any questions don't hesistate to email me.
