The
INAUGURAL
COMMODORE MIKE ZOSA CUP
RACE RESULTS
Sunday May 21, 2000
The Inaugural Commodore Mike Zosa cup kicked off with a practice race the day before race day. There were quite a few people who joined, including 3 PRSC one meter boat owners and a Yamaha 40EX. After a lecture on basic rules of seamanship and a short lecture on race rules by Peter Capotosto the group went out of the conference room to sail, just then the wind started to pick up and it cooperated, giving everyone a chance to enjoy sailing their boats against other boats. The practice session also gave oppurtunity for people who have long since chatted over email to finally meet, specially the 1 meter class boat owners.
RACE day:
The event was intially scheduled so that non boat owners will get the
chance to sail the mini soling and join the race. The first event
was slightly delayed because some boat owners have called up to say they
are on their way and are just caught in traffic. By the time the
first race started, the wind was already picking up.
Starting sequence
(you can see how strong the wind was blowing by looking at the coconut
trees)
During the first race, there were 5 boats in the race, including Mon's CR914. The wind was already a bit strong that the Ching gon had to retire. The CR914 finished first, with Kalayaan and "A.I.C.A" battling it out for second place. Kalayaan hit a bouy then AICA hit Kalayaan both incurring 720degree penalties from the onwater judge. While both boats did their penalties, Esmeralda came from behind and finished the course easily, Kalayaan followed, while AICA had electronics problem during the penalty turn and wasn't able to finish.
The second race was a fluke, when Ching gon and AICA wasn't able to finish repairs in time to start the race. Kalayaan made a good start, battling it out with Esmeralda and the CR914, while "Tape" (which was the nickname of Dr. Ronan's boat, coz it was taped up just so that it can join the regatta) followed a few seconds after the start. In the middle of the race, Esmeralda had an accident, a ripped jib caused the whole rig to fall apart, the rescue boat was called in. The CR914 and the rest decided to forfeit because it was really difficult to control the boats in the now howling wind. Kalayaan was declared the winner because she was the only boat left sailing.
A view of the control area, the boat with the white sail
is a CR914, braving the winds along with the mini solings. (note
the wind blowing on the Phil. flag)
After the second race, a squall came, which forced the race committee to postpone the next race. Which was welcomed by the participants. Ching gon was being repaired and retweaked by the Commoder's team headed by Patrick and Spain. Esmeralda needed a new Forestay, and so Peter was at work with it. Kalayaan was out with electronics problem, along with AICA and Tape. Tape had to drop out of the regatta due to a lost deck cover, she did try to sail one more race using an improvised cover.
The Third race, was also very exciting, by the time the rain stopped, Peter finished Esmeralda's rigging, while Ching gon was already up and running. It was a nice battle between Ching gon and Esmeralda, this time Esmerlada finished first followed by Ching gon, Kalayaan was out with electronics problem again, while the others expressed retirement.
The last race was the final survival test. By this time the wind was so strong that outside of Manila Yacht club basin the waves were whitecapping and the waves were pounding the breakwater. Eventually the only boats left in the race were the oldest boat of the fleet, Esmeralda finished the race, while Kalayaan had control problems and was only going to be given a placing if she sailed on her own back to the launch area, she was back in control just a few seconds after the skipper asked for the rescue boat to fetch her.
